Do Mole deterrents work?

The short answer is ‘No’. Many deterrents are sold on the basis that they emit vibration to scare the moles. As moles recognise vibration as potential food in their tunnel system, these devices are likely to have precisely the opposite effect. The large number of mole hills seen on road side verges are further evidence that moles are undeterred by vibration.

Perhaps one of the most futile devices is a solar powered light up owl sold as a mole deterrent. It is unclear how this would deter an animal that lives below ground and is essentially blind.

Traditional trapping remains the only effective solution.
